Selling Your Car
by Jakalyn Mitchell
There are many reasons you may be trying to sell your car. You may have bought another one, and now need to get rid of this one. Something big may have gone wrong with it and you would prefer to sell it rather and take a loss rather than put forth the time and the money to fix it. It is possible that you simply have one too many cars, or that you just need the money more than you need the vehicle. Whatever the reason you are selling your car for, you will need to follow these guidelines to make the quickest and easiest sale.
There are many places you can list your car for sale, including newspapers, online ads, and more. You can list your vehicle on auction sites, such as ebay, to sell it to the highest bidder. The only downfall of doing this is that it might take longer to sell, or you might not get as many takers, because the shipping charges add to a buyer's total cost. Another way to list that is very popular is Auto Trader or Truck Trader. The vehicle can be advertised in the print version or online (or both). You can visit www.autotrader.com for more information. There are many other sites such as this as well, such as www.thriftynickelads.com, which will list the ad online as well as in the free newspaper. Others, such as www.cars.com are good sites as well, and there are also many little known selling sites, such as www.craigslist.org. This site isn't as well known as many others, but it is a great place to buy and sell vehicles (as well as other items).
When you will be selling your vehicle, there are a few things to do beforehand that will spike interest in the vehicle, and help sell it more quickly. First, you will want to make sure that nothing big is wrong with it. By putting even a thousand dollars into fixing a car, you can get as much as 1500 or 2000 more for it when you sell it. If you are unable to fix large things, you should at least try to fix the small things, such as mechanical windows, etc. The more features that work on a car, the more quickly it will sell, and the more money it will bring from that sale. Another thing you will want to do is to clean the car out completely. Be sure to check under the seats, in the trunk, dashboard, etc. You will want to vacuum the carpet and dust the dashboard. These things make the first impression of your car a better one, and will help it sell faster. Outside appearance is important, too, so you will want to wash the outside just as well. A clean car sells mush faster than a dirty one.
Pricing the car is a very important aspect of trying to sell a car. You will need to look up the average value of the car. One way to do this is to go to www.cars.com.
Once you have determined the average selling price of the car (by what condition the car is in and the mileage) you will be able to decide what price would be appropriate for your particular vehicle. You will need to keep in mind that whatever price you set, people considering purchasing your car will likely make an offer slightly lower than your price. So, if there is a certain price that you absolutely must have for the car (possibly what you need to pay it off or what you have invested, etc.) it would be a good idea to set a price a couple of hundred dollars above that.
Another important factor in how much you will be able to get for your car will be who you are selling it to- an individual or a dealership. If you are selling the car to a dealership, you will not be able to get as much for it as you would if you sold it to an individual. They buy cars to make a profit, so if they are going to sell it at retail, they will need to purchase it from you for much less than this to be able to make that profit. If you are looking to sell the car immediately, this might be the best option. While they tend to pay less than individuals for a car, they also purchase more quickly. There are many ways to go about selling your car, and the different approaches should have more to do with what your goal is in selling.
